Why Coating Technology Matters
For many years, sections of the fastener industry relied upon corrosion protection systems containing hexavalent chromium (Cr VI). As understanding of the environmental and occupational health risks associated with hexavalent chromium increased, European legislation introduced significant restrictions on its use across multiple industrial sectors during the 2000s.
All Powell Gee coatings are guaranteed to be hexavalent chromium (Cr VI) free. Powell Gee supplies fixing solutions in finishes including BZP (Bright Zinc Plated) and the higher-performance 500+ coating.
Powell Gee’s 500+ coating is a multi-layered, scratch- and rust-resistant system applied using a dip, spin and bake process below 200°C. It combines a 5μm metallic zinc layer for sacrificial galvanic protection, a chemical passivation layer, and a 10μm ceramic surface layer for abrasion and environmental resistance. The result is over 500 hours of neutral salt spray resistance while maintaining the thread tolerances, drilling performance and installation characteristics that are critical in self-drilling and fibre cement to timber applications.
